99 nissan has starting issues, acts like its out of gas Sign In

Does anyone else have a car that pretends like its out of gas? 1999 nissan sentra 4cyl 1.6liter 16valve twincam with 131,000 miles.
i have occasional issues starting my car. It acts like its out of gas even with a full tank. When i turn the key on i can hear the fuel pump running so i dont think thats it. We have replaced the fuel filter so thats in good shape. The plugs and plugwires are new, and the air filter is in good shape.
Although its fuel injected I find sometimes if i hold the footfeed just right while trying to start it i can get it to go. But that doesnt always work. Sometimes if i cant get it to start while its bein weird, if i just come back and try again it will start right up, but not always. Iv heard it could be one of my oxegen sensors but would like to know more.

When my car pretends I take away it's power antenna until is shapes up.................LOL

You're going to have to do some testing while the problem is present to have any idea what's going on.
Here is the procedure.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Sentras are known for fuel pumps kicking the bucket. Most times th pump itself is fine but the intenal chek valve that keeps the gas in the fuel lines from draining back into the tank fails. Try this the Next time you get in the car turn the key on but do not crank, you will hear the fuel pump run. Once the pump shuts off, do it again.... Prob do this 3 times.

Bet ya it'll start right up. Because what you are doing by cycling the key is reprising the fuel lines with fuel.
