99 grand am Starts Then Dies, But Will Eventually Stay Running
I have a 99 Pontiac Grand Am 3.4L 160000 miles. When i go to start it, it fires then dies,It will do this 3 or 4 times before I can keep it will stay running. And to get it to stay running I end up having to push the accelerator 1/4 to 1/2 throttle and hold the key in start position for a few seconds after it initially fires. After i get it to stay running it runs great.Any help would be great.

Start out taking a fuel pressure reading when the problem is occurring and get the codes read as you were advised on the other site. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Will do. With the key on and engine not running what should the pressure be? I did notice that the pressure regulator is new. Not sure of the brand.

Remember, this has to be done while the problem is present. The engine has to be cranking to keep pump running. With the ignition switch "ON" and the fuel pump "RUNNING", the fuel pressure indicated by the fuel pressure gage should be 284-325 kPa (41-47 psi).

No codes, fuel pressure kinda dances from low to high 40s as i crank it over and its trying to start.

Well after messing with this thing for a few months I finally threw in the towel and took it to somebody. Faulty Ignition switch. Thanks everybody for your help.
