I do some spare time work on vehicles.,most of them top engine work.About a month ago a car that I've replaced the head,and all the seal plus a waterpump caught fire ,after the owner driven it for a week.I had assumed I was to blame.On inspection of the damage it looked like the fire started between the powersteering hose and fire wall. The hood was burnt over that area.I took pictures and went through my head trying to figure out what was the cause.I amost accepted the blame until I checked the recalls on this vehicle.There was a recall on it concerning underhood fires ,with this info I confronted the owner. Almost every week he calls me saying the dealership wouldn't anwser his claim or tell him why. I told him that the car had alot of fallbacks on it .Such as the history of this car ,it set up over ayear, he bought it not running or knowing the condition of the car. However he did say the car started smoking after he got it home,I asked him why didn't he bring it back or call me , he didn't answer me. If you were in my shoes what would you say to handle this headache???

Arggh! Real rock and a hard place. Where the fire started is critical now. If it was anything you would have normally touched in doing work on this car I think you may own the problem. Chase down and print out any info you can find on a recall about fires for this car.
As you know an engine can catch fire from oils. I had one go up by spilling some oil on a hot manifold while adding oil at a gas pump no less ions ago but the place was equipped with extinguishers right at hand and except for cleaning no damage happened with that as it was out in an instant! WOW!!!! "At a gas station" never mind the car that could have been the whole end of town!!!!
It would have been nice if this person let you know there was anything wrong after your work. I have seen this type thing go to courts and especially when ins is paying they will find small print items that minimize losses or pay outs if found that a person ignored a warning like "smelling gas, seeing smoke etc." and didn't take action. Customers almost always win though as they are not expected to be experts! Good luck. Everyone wins if you can handle this without fighting about it,
