99 Park Ave wont crank over all the way Sign In

Hey everybody i just wanna say thanks in advance any help is appreciated!! i got a 99' Buick Park Avenue 3.8L V-6 non supercharged auto. 115k miles
i was driving down the road, accelerated to overtake a semi truck, passed him and the car started to "studder" like if your fuel pump or transmission were going out is what it felt like, did this for 1 mile, then the rpms started to drop and my chech engine light started flashing, about 10-15 seconds later she died, tried to start it cranked for 10 secs wouldnt start, tried again after 30 secs to cool the starter and something gave and the starter would spin but not engage flywheel...great i was thinking head gasket, checked oil but no coolant. neighbor pulled me home, checked the code, there was 2 codes, it said "multiple cylinder miss-fire" on both codes, regardless i needed to fix the starter so i pulled it out, flywheel looks fine, brought battery in as well, battery checked out ok but starter was junk. put new one in tested it before i left the store, it will engage (audible click, followed by humm like starter is trying to turn it over) checked battery cables, they looked good connections look good, the battery is a 1 year old interstate, i put a socket on the pulley and was able to turn the motor easily by hand, took the new starter in to be tested, once again it was fine, bolted it up but not all the way and the starter spun, but then bolted it in all the way and it just wont crank it over but you can hear it trying, no click click click like if the battery was low, tried with jumper cables also but same click followed by humm.... someone told me the catalytic converter may be clogged, so i un-bolted the exhaust right before the cat. but same story again. i also hear the upper n lower intake gaskets go out often, could coolant get into the cylinder from an intake gasket?? what should i do please help! thanks a million!!!!!!

What you need to do is remove all the spark plugs and then crank the engine over. If coolant spits out of any of the cylinders, your going to have to remove the intake manifold. this engine has a know problem with the plastic intake manifold deteriorating and leaking coolant into the valley. It doesn't get into the oil but once the level rises above a certain point, it starts drawing it into the intake. Your engine may be hydrolocked with a cylinder full of coolant. If this turns out to be the case, you will have to replace the intake manifold. There a couple of companies that make an aftermarket manifold that is much cheaper than the dealer.

You mentioned that you turned the engine over 'easily' by hand. Just how easily? May want to check compression. Could have 'puked' a timing chain? Use your ratchet and socket again on the crank pulley bolt. Move it one direction gently until you feel resistance, then the opposite way until you feel resistance. If more than 6 degrees movement, that's not good.

Re: 99 Park Ave wont crank over all the way Sign In

thanks a million guys! when i go home tonight im gonna pull the plugs and maybe ill be pumpin some fluid out of there.... oh and when i turned the motor by hand it wasnt like super easy but i could do it with a 1/2 ratchet wrench there was definatively some friction but i could do it by hand and timing chain seems to be intact knock on wood...just hopefully i didnt bend my valves or something....where would you recommend looking for an intake manifold? i tried car-part.com but i dont know if im willing to dump money into a manifold that could be junk!

Dormon makes a replacement manifold for under $200 and most auto parts stores carry it but don't assume anything unless you find coolant in the cylinders.

i found one on partspros.com i think its a dormon for $130! but yea im definatively with you im gonna go home n pull the plugs first. so its just the upper plenum that has problems and should i do the lower intake gasket as well if it is indeed a coolant leak into the cylinders

No, not unless you specifically see coolant leaking from that area. The problems are with the upper manifold. They have very few problems with the lower.

If we are correct, you will see a lake when you pull the upper manifold off. You can start out just checking to see if you have lost any coolant. If none is missing, the problem is unlikely.

coolant was low in the radiator, pulled the plugs and sure enough coolant started sprayin out when i cranked it... doesnt sound rough though so i have hope for her! so i guess next step is to pull the upper manifold?

Yep, it will be obvious when you get the upper intake off.

Re: 99 Park Ave wont crank over all the way Sign In

It depends what you find when you pull the upper off. If the valley is full of coolant, I wouldn't be too concerned with the lower. That's a LOT more work and likely not leaking much if any.

HT; Nice looking shop! Right on the beach? Jerk! I'm green with envy. LOL. NW coastlines aren't too 'friendly'. Just a bit on the COLD side.

Those Condos you see in the background are Oceanfront. My shop is butted up against the public beach parking lot.
