99 Grand Prix-Trouble Initially Getting Into Gear-then its fine?	Sign In

Have a 99 Grand Prix-runs fine..just a few times over the last couple of weeks it has not gone into ANY gear right away after first starting up....not sure if that is a problem with the safety mechanism on the ignition or the computer....once I get going I have no trouble shifting gears..i.e. Drive..reverse..first..second..Its just a problem when it initially starts up..ALSO if I shut it down AFTER getting it moving and into gear and then restart it I have NO Problems getting it into gear..its just the first time I get going I have trouble...

..Any idea what may be the issue? I don't think it feels like a transmission issue since there is no issues with it shifting once I get it going..but then again I am not a mechanic..

I just want to clarify the issue..Its only a problem when I first start up..I can shut it down and restart it dozens of times in a row after it goes into gear and have no problems..its just when it first starts up that I have a problem getting it moving..once its moving there are no problems..

You are talking about an automatic - right?

If you can't shift out of PARK that's a safety device - solonoid the releases shifter - most are triggered by the brake light switch to release.......as in foot not on brake you don't shift out of park,
