1999 Ford Crown Victoria LX 4.6L ~111000 This started happening a week ago. I wouldn't describe the steering as sloppy or unresponsive, but I have to turn almost to the lock when making slow turns or I'll make a wide arc and wind up in the other lane. I've never had to go past ~200 degrees of rotation when making these slow turns. The tires are new and I had an alignment a couple months ago. The only thing that has changed is a ball joint was replaced on the left side, but it felt fine right after getting back and this started at least a month after that was replaced. Power steering fluid is good, I don't feel it going out while turning, and there are no noises. The mechanic did tell me when I went in out about the balljoints that the pittman arms might be the next problem. He told me they were designed not to fall off, but nothing about what effects their failing would cause. Could this be a result of that?

That sounds like it could be extremely dangerous. You need to get it inspected immediately and you shouldn't be driving it in the meantime. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
