98 stratus - broken timing belt. worth to fix? Sign In

A friend of mine has a 98 dodge stratus. the timing chain broke. and our family mechanic that we always go to to fix our cars says that he will rebuild it for 500. the car itself would be sold for 200 or 300. My dad says it's worth it to fix because it'll basically have a new engine kind of. My brother says it's not worth it at all because other parts could have been damaged. I don't know about cars really, but if the timing chain broke, the car doesn't run. so as soon as it broke, the car stopped working, how could it ruin other parts? It's not like you were driving with a bad part and it ruined other things in the process.

Could someone please explain this to me?
I'm a college student looking for a car. And at first this car sounded worth it .. Now i'm not so sure...

I need to be sure about the engine size so i can determine if it's an interference engine or not. That will determine whether the engine could have damage or not.
If you give me the 8th digit of the VIN#, I can tell with that.

Those have timing belts, not chains & they're all interference engines........ If it's just a belt it's worth it.... If it has bent valves or worse (If it's a 2.5) then you may want to rethink it..... One thing Chry has a problem with their water pumps... If you do the belt, do it right & change the pump & idler pulleys. ( I would put the belt on 1st to verify no engine damage before I put the pump & pulleys on).

The 2.4 available for this car is the DOHC which IS NOT an interference engine. Also the 2.5 only shows as interference for the "N" motor used in the Avenger and Sebring. The Stratus uses an "H" motor which I believe IS NOT interference. The 2.0 however is interference.

I've never seen a Stratus (unless an R/T) with anything other than a 2.4L engine. The 2.4L is an "Interference engine" meaning that if the timing belt breaks at the 'wrong' time, the pistons can make contact with the valves and bend them.
With that said, I can't remember an instance where this has happened. Honda 4 cylinders are 'interference engines' and only about 1% will bend valves when the belt breaks. Good luck.

The 2.4 SOHC is an interference engine but the 2.4 DOHC is not. The valves can contact each other if the cams are rotated out of time with each other but they won't hit the pistons.

The 2.5 was available in the 98 Stratus

Just to add I haven't seen may cars self destruct when the belt breaks but it does happen. Case in point the Audi A6 Quato that came in a few days ago. KAPLOOWY!!
