98 durango reving high until 3rd

1998 Durango 5.9L with 4X4 has 137k miles.
Truck started reving high and making a higher pitched noise yesterday. Noise is gone and runs at correct rpm's after third gear. Any ideas would be appreciated. My thoughts are transmission.

Daniel; Have you noticed any abnormalities in the speedometer? Glitches, needle bouncing, anything? Check engine lamp illuminated?
