98 deville wont start - runs hot

Hi. I've been driving a 98 deville with overheating problems for a while now. My mechanic said that to fix it the head would have to be rebuilt. He did not recommend this as it has 104000 miles on it and I am pretty broke.
I have been driving it - carrying water bottles,refilling often, and keeping to short trips. This has been working out for me for months now - I do consider myself very lucky.
This morning I got in to drive my kids to school - and when I turned the key - nothing.
The battery cables are fine.
I was looking around these forums for symptoms/problems that it may be Bessie's final days.
I pulled the oil dipstick and it does smell like gasoline.
Am I all done with my car?
Any suggestions?

What exactly is it doing or not doing? Is the starter trying to crank the engine? Have you tested or jumped the battery?

When I turn the key I get nothing. No woowoo noise, just one click and done. I havent tested the battery - dont know how. No one around to jump the car now - and of course it is in a narrow driveway which will make it hard later on.

Well, your going to have to test a few things. Test the battery first and then put a socket on the crank bolt and make sure the engine will turn by hand.

Yes, it sounds like you need to be scrolling through the yellow pages instead if the Internet. I can give you advice but you would have to be able to follow it.

Do you know what this means or what causes it?
Put in key - turned - very low whirring noise - dash says - REMOVE KEY - STARTING DISABLED
I must have missed it this morning in my panic to find a way to get the kids out on time.

Oh - and I already tried my spare key - in case the chip was damaged on mine. No good - same message.

Your on the right track but it's not the chip that goes bad. It's the sensor that reads it in the ignition switch. I can give you instructions to bypass it but it involve some electronic measurements and soldering of wires.

Thanks,
Knowing what the problem is and that it can be overridden gives me a starting point for calling a mechanic to see how much it might run me. No - unfortunately - I don't own soldering tools or electronic measurement equipment.
Today does make me think about taking at least a basic auto repair course at the local vocational school.
