My daughter's Saturn 98 SL2 (100K miles!) and automatic transmission, can be shifted from park when the car sits overnight. (not a cold climate either) She wiggles it and ususally after about 5 minutes she can shift it. Never happens when the car is warm. The brake lights all work and there is no place I can see where you can overide with the key as mentioned in another similar posting. I couldn't even get into neutral. What is the likely cause(s)?

If I do have to bring it to a shop what should I tell them? I really can't spend too much on this car and the repair may be the death of it if is too costly. Hoping it is something like a sensor and not a transmission...Unsure

Theres a safety device on this vehicle...its either a cable/or a small metal line, that attaches to the brake cable, the ends where it connects are wore or the cable has stretched, but you have to determind that by removing the console.I'll try to find you some type of diagram.

dave284 I have read in reference to other postings to something similar with some item behind the brake pedal.

This item (sorry I forgot name) relates to releasing the shifter for safety purposes.

Do you think this may be at fault?

http://www.autozone.com/.../repairInfoPages.htm here is some info on removing the console......9 out 10 it would be the safety device, but there is the other parts...such as the neutral safety switch on the trans/ that button on the shifter/ even the trans itself.....the shifter would be the most likely part to check first...LOL.
