98 Ranger voltage problem

Sometimes when I start my Ranger the volt meter will read low like 8 volts and other times it is maxed all the way up past 15 volts. It returns to normal after a few minutes. Could this be the Alternator or Voltage regulator or are the two combined in a Ford. Any suggestions. Thanks

http://www.autozone.com/...artTypeResultSet.htm <<<< That's the whole alternator. I couldn't tell from the pic if the regulator was attached outside or inside this one. Didn't find it sold separately either. Pricy thing. I'd look for the regulator if you can find one. If it's the easy one it's just bolted on the back with torx screws - other is inside - if handy can do if you get the trick with holding the brushes back - index the casings so they are clocked properly if you do go in there, T
