98 Dodge neon ignition problem

Hi, every now and then the key wont turn in the ignition, i thought maybe the steering wheel was not locked but no that wasent it, after messing with it for awhile it will turn thats when i thought, whats this rubber mallet in the car for?? (i just bought this car)so i called the guy i bought it from and he says oh yeah that happens now and then and to just tap the key with the rubber mallet (duh) ok this is really stupid, can i just change the switch or is it something different?? also if i change the switch will the key still work or will i have a different key for the ignition and for the doors?? and of course does any one know how to change the switch?? Thanks in advance for any help.

It sounds like you need to change the ignition lock. If you buy an aftermarket lock, it will be a different key but if you buy it from the dealer, I believe it can be coded to your old key.
