I went to a mechanic to figure out why my car doesn't get as good mileage as it used to and seems to have a hard time building speed and maintaining it. He ran down a list of problems and I wanted to see which could be fixed by a backyard mechanic (or myself via a tutorial) since I'm pretty much broke and rely on my car to get to work.
Distributor Cap, rotor and wires
Spark Plugs
The tailpipe just came off my muffler yesterday, it's still attached to the car and not dragging, and the muffler is intact, but I think I'm going to replace it since it appears the tailpipe rusted off. I've heard it can be welded but the mufflers I've priced online are only around 88 bucks.
They said I may need a fuel line flush as that may be the problem with the low mileage and the car having a hard time picking up speed. I just had the fuel line replaced last year, but my area was hit with a widespread distribution of bad gas or tainted gas.
I know the fuel line flush will have to be done by a shop, but how much is a good deal for that (Or really anything I've listed)? I don't want to get overcharged since I just got overcharged for a new water pump. Thanks guys.

Well with any type of running problem it's always good to take care of any overdue maintenance items 1st. Sometimes you may get lucky & solve your problem.
With the exhaust problems it's probably going to be best to go ahead & get new stuff put on. If the pieces are falling off due to rust, more than likely they are trash on the inside so you wouldn't want to waste you time or money patching it back together.
I don't know your mechanical abilities so can't really answer if this is something you can do or not. The maintenance stuff on this particular vehicle isn't a real tough job so it's something most DIYers can tackle. If you haven't done it before definitely do as much research as possible. I would suggest maybe get a buddy or someone you know with a little more background to help oversee your work while you do it. Just make sure you do the work. Watching & doing are 2 completely different things....
The only thing in the back of my mind is you saying the truck is having trouble picking up speed. I would need to drive it to feel it for sure but this isn't something that is normally associated with a "tune up" type problem. When you are getting the exhaust work done, tell them about this problem so they can take a good look at the whole system. A partially restricted system could cause this problem. If all that checks out & you still have the same problem, maybe swing it by a recommended tranny shop & let them take if for a spin & see what they think.....
What makes you think you were overcharged for a waterpump??

It was a whole hullaballoo with the radiator fan being loose and the pump. I forget PRECISELY but it was about $635 all told in the end. Got pretty reamed out by my dad for it, for paying too much but it got fixed so...I'm just not sure what things cost so, I figured I'd ask experts.
