98 Camaro misfiring Sign In

Hello,

I have a 98 Camaro V6 5 speed that is not running well. I do not know alot about cars so please forgive my ignorance about mechanical issues. Here is my problem....

My service engine soon light is on. When the car is in a low gear it doesn't seem like it is getting gas. It sputters in first gear pretty bad, second gear is not as bad, but by third gear it is almost completely gone. Unless I am going up a hill then I have to downshift to keep it from misfiring. Pretty much the higher the RPM's the less it misfires. This morning while stopped at a redlight it sounded like it was backfiring or starting to backfire. When I started to give it gas I didn't think that it was going to go anywhere at all because it was missing so bad and the service engine soon light started flashing. Finally it got better and I was able to make it home, but it had me worried.

About 6 or 7 months ago I changed the plugs, plug wires, fuel pump. So I wouldn't think that one of those would be the problem, but I have no idea.

I do not know anything about cars, but my grandfather has a good bit of tools and knows more than me. So with a little help on where to start we may be able to figure this out. Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

Thanks,
RyanW

After posting my wife said she thought that AutoZone would scan your computer for free, but I wasn't for sure. So I guess I will try that and see what they say.

Thanks,
RyanW

on your 98 do you have a coil where all spark/wires all plug
into? that might be your problem "weak coil"

you should also know if your engine light is on your
car its waisting 20% more fuel and when it starts "flashing
like that i hate too say it but your sending raw fuel
down the exhaust stream where its damaging your catalytic converter

your next step is too definatly get it scanned for codes
with a misfire there will be a code set on your car
obd2 ecm yours is easyer for it will provide more info then for if you had a
obd1 wich came in 95

so yah get it scanned for codes before you harm
that engine!!
