Larry; As the engine warms, and the temp guage begins to climb, it should stop in the 'NORMAL' range. Once the thermostat opens, the guage may drop a bit, but should go back to the 'NORMAL' range and stay there. If the temp is climbing quickly from cold to hot, then back to cold, sounds like a sticky thermostat, coolant low, or a faulty sending unit. Can you describe what you are seeing more specifically?
