Our old master was no good so we replaced it with one we purchased from a junk yard was working good on the car they took it off of. Now it is installed in the cavalier and we have started bleeding the brakes, I realize that you start bleeding the brakes from the master cylinder. And we seem to be getting fluid to the back brakes but even at the master cylinder we seem to have trouble getting fluid or air hissing out of the front brakes and we have but pumping for hours. Is there something we are doing wrong?
Thanks for your help!!!

And this surprises you?

Go get a new master cylinder as you should have in the first place and now completely flush the brake system of all the contamination you put into it before you have to replace everything in the system.

We don't diagnose "what if's" Get a new master on it and the system flushed and see what you have then.

If this car has ABS, I sure hope you know what you're doing concerning the gear timing.

Ok replaced with a NEW master cylinder, and same problem. The front brakes arent bleeding but the back ones are. The battery is dead right now, and we were wondering if there had to be power to the master cylinder to bleed the brakes. What does the gear timing have to do with that bleeding of brakes please?
Thank you for you time!

I believe there is a bleeding procedure. You have to home the motor pack, so it can bleed properly.

NOTE: This method can only be used if the ABS indicator lamp is not illuminated and no DTCs are present. Do not place your foot on the brake pedal through this entire procedure unless specifically directed to do so.

1. Remove foot from brake pedal.
2. Start engine and allow it to run for at least 10 seconds while observing the ABS indicator lamp.
3. If the ABS indicator lamp turned ON and stayed ON after about 10 seconds, a scan tool must be used to diagnose the ABS malfunction.
4. If the ABS indicator lamp turned ON for approximately 3 seconds, then turned OFF and stayed OFF, turn the ignition OFF.
5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 one more time.
6. The entire brake system can now be bled.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
