'97 Sable parking brake lights for no reason?	Sign In

I've got a '97 Mercury Sable GS 3.0. The parking brake light has been coming on and will stay lit for a while, then will go off, but will come back on again, and this just repeats itself while I drive. Lately it has just been staying on most of the time (all of this with no use of parking brake at all). Could this be just a bad connection, or does it mean something else? And if it does mean something else, what harm could it do and how can I correct it before it becomes a problem (if it hasn't already)?

If you mean the RED warning light many will come on for either parking brake or a fluid level/pressure problem. Make certain fluid is within the "min" and "max" range. If not find out why at once!

If parking brake is used only rarely (especially those cars) the cables can get corroded and not return fully and get you that brake light. You can usually see a floppy cable under the car if that's happening and they can be a pest to replace sometimes.

If either is the problem it is urgent to tend to that. A problem with the switch has not been common to me,

This is more than likely your problem. If there is no leaks, the brakes are worn down to the reploacement poing. I woulod have them checked real soon.
