My 97 Jetta stalls after going through a puddle. This has happened 3x in the last 6 months. It eventually starts up again after about an hour. It even happened after going through the car wash. Why is this happening?

It sounds as if water is contacting some electric point and shorting out. Could be water is getting into the ignition system somewhere and when dry works okay.

I had this problem with the same kind of car last year.
It's the ignition coil. They're cheap.

Try this.
Run the engine
open the hood
spray water on the ignition coil, just a little.
If the engine stops then it's the coil.
if not, then keep spraying different areas of the system to find the short.

A cracked coil is one of many possibilities. The ignition wires and cap and rotor if it has them are very likely also. They are alll effected by moisture when they get old.
