96 intrepid starter problem!! Sign In

Hello All..

96 chrysler intrepid has 2 problems..

first, the starter, when i turn the key the car trys and trys to start making the normal noises then doesn't... BUT it always goes on the 2nd try, always takes 2 tries and then goes... BUT the second time, when it finally starts it makes a brief but loud GRINDING noise just as it catches... Any help here would be great??? what it is how to fix it???

Hmmm?? If this does this every time you go to start the car I would blame the starter. An engine doesn't stop in the same position so a missing or broken ring gear (flywheel) wouldn't do the grinding every time. Hard to say but I think I would try the starter now as if it can screw up that ring gear it'll be big work or bucks.

It's the grinding noise that has me confused and it may be just misunderstanding your discriptionCrazy T

the grinding noise is only brief when the car finally starts the second time... the noise is like the noise when you start a car that is already started... only briefly and its not from holding the start for too long it happens RIGHT when the start go's...

how can i go about fixing a starter or playing around with it..things to try??? I'd rather try and do something myself here as opposed to taking it in... any ideas???

thanks

We are getting there I hope. Sounds like the starter drive that is the gear thown out at the ring gear doesn't retract as it should. Some are available separate from the whole starter and some are hard to do.

OK! The risk outweighs the potential cost of damage and if it were mine that whole starter would be out of there. Las Vegas 101, T
