I recently changed my starter and everything seemed ok. It started without any problem. However, just for curiosity's sake I decided to turn the ignition to "start" when the engine was running and the engine check and batt lights popped up as expected, but there was no grinding noise. Does this mean that the starter is staying engaged? I checked fow a whirring noise coming from the starter and felt the housing to see if it was spinning, but I couldn't differentiate any noises or vibrations from common engine occurances. The starter is a pmgr. To sum up, the starter starts the engine just fine, when I turn off the car it does not keep trying to turn the engine over and there is no immediately obvious noise or vibrations. Thanks for any insight. ~Michael

I wouldn't have tried that myself, knowing the bad results that would usually happen, but maybe nowadays there is a prevention system that won't let the gears engage and grind up if the motor is already turning. I would think the starter would get really hot in short time if it was staying engaged. You could pull it and try it out of the car to be sure it goes back to neutral. No mechanic, just some experiences.
