Hi gang. New to this forum, old to the world. LOL
Times are tough, but doable and a new car just isn't in the picture for another 5 years or so. We have a KLR and Rendevous to pay off first.

The Galant with 143,000 actually starts and runs perfect, but as expected, stuff is getting loose and clickety clackety all over the place. Namely the front end. Previous owner replaced the right wheel bearing at 100k but left the left side alone. Now it hums unless making a left curve and the load is transferred to the right (good) side. I gotta fix this thing and have done most or all of my own repairs over the years but this one has me stumped.

Can the bearing be repaired or do I halfta replace the thing? I've had the wheel off a few times and cannot get the nut loosened. This is my first attempt at doing a repair on a front wheel drive.

The other issues are clunking even over the smallest of bumps and when I first apply the brakes, forward or reverse. There's no uneven tire wear but the whole front is "loose". The shocks have never been replaced, or struts, whatever holds this thing steady.

Any usable advice is very much appreciated. I plan to get the Clymer payday.

Thanx guys,
CheapMark

The bearing is serviced as a hub assembly; the bearing in the hub is a sealed unit and cannot be serviced.
The centre nut has a torque of 160lbs; so it will take a bit of effort to loosen it.
It also must be back at this torque, after replaced or the new bearing will fail.

Thank you Dan.

That was the answer I expected, but hoped not to hear.
Wonder how long before it fails completely? I'm along the Great Lakes in NW Indiana
and the weather's the same here as Canada Eh. LOLOL Hope iy holds another 1000 mi (1400km)

20 deg and dropping fast for the whole next week. Alberta Clipper comin' thru!
That's -6 deg C in your book and the snow has been falling two days and lake effect snow
expected to continue close to a week. Probably 3 ft. (1m) before it's over. Nice.

The other issues soon to be addressed are the rest of the front end. It's been this way a year
and cannot be put off any longer really. The clunks and rattles keep getting louder over time.
I'll baby the car thru the winter and start saving my
pennies to get the new shocks n' struts. When it comes to that, I have to pay Midas to do it.
I don't have the compression tools to do that stuff.

Thank you so much for your time and the attached picture.

CheapBass; The front wheel bearing assy. retails for about 135.00. Calls for one hour's labor. If you are a DIYer, not a difficult job to do. This isn't something you want to 'let go'. Just had a Taurus in, Friday. The bearing had gone so bad that it ruined the wheel speed sensor and the reluctor wheel on the CV shaft. Not to mention the safety factor.

Thank you Loren for the heads up. My family rides in this thing and I'll get on the case.
I'll do this part right away and let the buggy rattle while I save up the rest for the shock/ strut stuff.
I read also about ball joint issues with the 95 and 96 production runs.

P.S. This is a WONDERFUL site to learn from and have done quite alot of browsing since stumbling in.
I'll help where I can and learn where I can. Thanks again!

Wow! Thankyou for the kind remark. I agree. I've only been here a couple of years and feel the same way. Everyone is friendly and it's kind of cool that you get so many ideas. Just a bunch of kooks, we are, staying out of our wive's ways. LOL. Glad to have you and any info that you have stuffed way back there... Let me guess...you are a Bass fisherman? LOL. Have a great week.

Hi, I'm doing the same on my 95 Galant. I have the 4 hub bolts removed but it doesn't want to seperate from the bracket. Brakes are off and axel nut is removed, axel is loose and not seized to the hub. Only hammer I've got is a 20oz framing hammer and I've already mashed up the old hub pretty good and it's not budging. Do I just need a bigger hammer? This pot licker is really on there. Help?

This is an old thread. If you have a question, just start a new one of your own.
