95 saturn sc1.. burens alot of oil. white smoke. Sign In

I drive a 1995 saturn sc1. i bought it a week ago with 170000 miles on it. It smokes constantly out the exhust and somewhere underneath the car in the front somewhere. Its white smoke which means water or coolant is getting in the exhaust. But my coolant isnt getting low. Its been at the same level since i bought the car.

But the oil is magically disappering. i add about a quart every two days. I smell oil when i rev the engine. and alot more smoke clouds come out when i rev it. but the coolant is dirty. its like a brown. i have a feeling oil is getting in there. but my car does not leak when parked.

i am pretty good a diy jobs. i have pretty much replaced the whole front end on my sl1 just by getting directions on how to do it. People say it is a head gasket. but if that was the case wouldn i be losing alot of coolant?..and im not. If this is something i could fix myself let me know because i wil try.

quick summary...
1. burns white smoke..not blue
2. Oil dissapears
3. Dirty coolant
4. Smell oil
5. whats the problem with my car?

Guest; First, I'd want to rule out the head gasket possibility; Easy enough test. If that tests okay, then...
Sometimes, a PCV valve can go bad and actually suck oil out of the crankcase and burn it. Also, a piston ring can break and allow oil to bypass the rings and burn. We just had an SL2 in the other day...had about 30% leaking past the rings on all four cylinders. Suspected that the engine had gotten very hot. If you are lucky enough to have it be a faulty PCV valve, then I'd attack the cooling system.
