95 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Coils and Ignition Control Module Help! Sign In

Vehicle: 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Special Edition, 3.4 L DOHC, Auto Trans., 130,000 Miles.

Problem: 2 bad coils and bad Ignition Control Module. Was told by garage it would cost $570 to do something I can buy the parts for and pay only 200-250 and do my self but one problem(read below).

I looked up on Chilton's exactly how to replace all 3 coils and ICM and it looks like no big deal but...... Chilton's states that for the 3.1 and 3.4 L, after replacing everything, that it must be hooked up to a Tech 1® or equivalent scan tool(which I don't have) and

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position, engine not running.

  2. Select IAC SYSTEM, then IDLE LEARN in the MISC TEST mode.

  3. Place the transaxle in P or N, as applicable.

  4. Proceed with idle learn as directed by the scan tool.

My question is: Is there anyway this can be done without the scan tool( is Chilton's full of crap) or does this need to be done? Thanks for any help!

I think that your looking at the procedure for idle learning on an older Prix that has the 3.1L T engine.

There is no procedure for idle learn on this one besides starting the engine and driving the car.

Idk, I hope so but this is what it says:

On the 3.1L or 3.4L engines, this procedure must be performed before the engine is started and requires the use of a Tech 1®, or equivalent, scan tool.
If equipped with the 3.1L or 3.4L engine, perform the idle learn procedure to allow the ECM/PCM memory to be updated with the correct IAC valve pintle position and provide for a stable idle speed.

The older 3.4L, 3.1L, and 2.8L had the idle learn procedure, but after 93 the 3.4L went to sequential port fuel injection and the idle learn procedure was done away with.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping to come to a forum like this and find a experienced auto mechanic or tech. that takes the time out of their day to help fellow people in need. I actually did a little research before I found out Discretesignals is reliable and found almost exactly what he said. Thanks for saving me 300 bucks! I'll update on how it turns out.
