95 Olds has me confused and no idea what to do next Sign In

1995
Oldsmobile
Delta 88
3.8 liter
37,000 miles

Ok here is my dilemma, my car randomly dies going down the road at various speeds and at a stop light/sign or while idleing in park, it will usually stutter a bit before any of this happens but not always. Heck sometimes I don't even know it died till trying to turn steering wheel because its runs so quiet. At first I could toss up in netural and restart and be on my way but now I have to leave sit anywhere from 5 min to overnight. Check engine light comes on when this happens but goes right back out when it starts back up, lately I have been hearing a clicking noise comming from the passenger side foot area when the engine light flickers not sure if that has always been there when it happens or not.

History of the car it sat for several years in a garage never started (reason for only 37,000 original miles). The car ran great at first after replacing the dead battery and changing the oil, then after a few months it started the aforementioned condition.

Things I have done to try and fix problem are, replaced fuel filter, replaced fule pump screen, replaced fuel pump, replaced spark plugs, replaced throttle body sensor, replaced fuel pressure regulator, blew air through fuel lines to see if they were clear, replaced fuel tank sending unit, replaced crankshaft position sensor(a pain to get to).

Now the auto-parts stores here are at a loss as to what it could be and they both tried checking computer but neither could get a reading because it is a 95 and not a 96.

So anyone have any idea what I should try next and where to go from there if that dosen't work? Also sorry so long winded but wanted to try and give as much info as I could.

Thanks,
Siege

That "clicking" noise is the clue no doubt! Arggh! Guess I'd check electrical connections on items underhood on passenger's side. Make sure battery cable connections at both ends and the one to alternator are good.

You should be able to get a code reading on this - AutoZone advertizes free code checks which should include this model year too,

Advance auto and AutoZone neither can read the codes they both tried but no luck.

Try others or check to see if this car can just count blinks with a paperclip trick. I can't recall right now if it's one of those. Also don't think the reading will be the total answer but would be interesting info.

It's the noise that had me thinking it's just a power/ground supply problem to something and that something can "click" over it. Keep in mind that gounds count as much as power supplied and are more elusive sometimes. There are grounding straps around the car in sight to check. If a control for engine operation is getting intermittent grounding it could be the cause. All guesses but worth checking out,

paper clip wont work on GM 1994 and 1995 only on 94 or older, 96 or newer must be OBD2, keep in mind when the car shuts off the engine light will come on. it does not sound like a fuel problem it sounds like one of two things. first inspect all the connections leading to your coil pack especially your ignition module, if all looks good, remove the ignition module have it tested at autozone at no cost. make sure they test it repeatally so it gets nice and hot. if it is bad it will pass the first few test and then fail. if after several test its determined to be good, you might have a faulty computer but that is something a pro should diagnose.

I took the coil pacs and ICM down to auto zone. The ICM was tested several times and passed no problems, coil pacs ohms were lower than normal but within range, put them back on and started car, it idled for over an hour then just died but started right back up so now back to square one.

Also does this car have a RPM limiter, because I tried revving it (about half pedal while parked) and it revs drops, revs drops, revs drops, etc; I am not sure what the RPM is when doing this because of no tach in the car.

I have seen coils do this on older vehicles. A manual and some testing with an volt meter or test light might help you.
