95 Mercury Grand Marquis power steering	Sign In

so the power steering on my 95 Mercury Grand Marquis malfunctions now and then. its not every time i get in the car. i checked the fluid and its filled to the max. the belt was replaced like a few months ago. can anyone tell me what to do?

Does it feel like there is a little catch or hard spot in the steering and then after you pass that point everything is OK? If so, look at the little universal joint that attaches the pieces together. It will be down under the master cylinder. Remove the bottom shaft from the steering box and spray the universal joint with penetrating oil and work it until it moves freely. If that is not it, please explain more the symptom you are having.

I would try flushing the power steering hydraulic system and giving it another try; mostly because the problem is intermittent it could be a bit of dirt or filings floating around in the steering gears control spool valve.
If that doesn’t do it you may need to have a pressure gauge connected to the system, too check the pressure that the pump can produce while the system is going its thing. If the pressures are ok then you’re looking at a replacement steering gear.
Again flush the system first; even if that doesn’t fix the problem it’s the first thing you have to do during the course of replacing the pump or gear; you don’t want to introduce any dirt into a new/rebuilt component.

when i turn lets say into a parking spot, the steeringlike all of a sudden is hard to turn and its like that untill i get into the car after i come back and start. i dont know how to explain it, but i will look into the joint you said.
