Okay, I'm no mechanic, but here goes. I'm under the impression that DOHC engines do not contain push rods on account of the cams being in direct contact with the valves? However, the knock that comes from the engine sounds identical to the noise created when I bent a rod in a 318 a few years back... Engine knocks appx 4 times / second but engine idles smoothly @ 800 rpm, no missing, no pinging, just this horrible knock. You can feel it when you place your hand just about anywhere on the engine (manifold, timing cover, air filter, EVERYWHERE!) and no one place has a stronger "feel" than another. Likewise on the shifter and the transfer case lever. Knock started over night while girlfriend was driving vehicle. NO indication what-so-ever was given by the vehicle. No steadily worsening tick, no torque converter or tranny slip, no sudden leaking of any fluids, never has happened even intermittenly. It JUST started knocking 3 days ago. The only things that have gone wrong since owning the vehicle are thus: Transmission went into safe mode and froze up last winter for 1 day due to moisture in the trans fluid (had flushed and filled, seals and gaskets replaced on trans and transfer case), pwr steering high press. line blew out, pwr steering box blew as well (the following week), and the battery discharged. That is every single thing that went wrong since owning. 4 months ago with the trans flush/fill, oil was also changed, tune-up, bearings and wheel seals replaced, just general 150,000 mile maintenance. Sorry to be so long winded, and thanks for ANY and all help!!!
