'95 Honda Civic LX Starting Problems- 16 yr driver Sign In

Yea, hi. Well, I have a '95 Honda Civic LX, manual, which was my dad's, so we bought it when it was new. Recently, the car just wouldn't start. It would start some days, and then it wouldn't start at all. It was like Herby the bug, but a civic instead. We have already sent it to the shop three times: 1) dianogsic check and they replaced the battery, saying it was almost dead and nothing was wrong. $250. 2) sent it in again for the same problem, emmisions test passed and nothing wrong, replaced a fuel pump wire. when i looked under the hood with my dad, i couldn't see the new wire! 3) same problem, not starting. Sent it in again: replaced distrabutor, spark plugs, and wires. $900. I could see the new distrabutor but the wires I couldn't and the plugs i couldn't check. I have also noticed that it doesn't start when it rains, or when it is very cold and wet outside, but when its sunny or decently warm it start fine and runs fine. My dad thinks its the fuel pump relay, and I have no clue because i just started to drive and use the car, by myself. Thx.

The fuel pump shouldn't be sensitive to rain. The secondaries of the ignition can be. Wires if not new will still usually start but run lousy (you questioned if they are new) -- other things like the coil and dist cap have to be right even if new they can't be dropped in handling.

WD-40 can (a maybe) help with wet ignition parts but that part is no good if that works, T

Sweet. Thank you for the reply Mr. Greenleaf. I'll ask about the ignition, but my question is what if the main relay has been effected? For I did a little research myself, and someone told me that there is a relay that is next to the steering column that works with the starting mechanism. Could it be this relay?

Everything is a maybe in on-line car help as you know. Check for spark when it fails at a plug wire.

This can be done with a screwdriver in a plug wire socket and held real close to known ground which is most engine parts. Use dry heavy gloves and don't let your body touch the car as the possible shock is just that! Not to be done without tools that can do this with no shock risk or folks with any heart problems. It won't hurt most people -- but can make you jump and hit your head on the open hood!

The idea here is to isolate this to a spark or fuel problem. Just crank the engine a couple times (a couple seconds) is enough.

See what you can find, T
