95 H. Accord engine dies when a/c is on Sign In

Strange question. When it's really hot the air conditioner quits cooling and the car keeps dying while idling. The oil light comes on, but there is plenty of oil in there. Got an oil change, no help. Plenty of coolant, put refrigerant in there. Temp gauge shows that it isn't even close to overheating.

When a/c is off the car doesn't die. In the morning or evening there's no problem because it's not as hot outside.

Any idea what might be going on? We are stumped!

Just in case it needed refrigerant, my father filled it up. I'm writing this on behalf of my father who is really good with cars but is getting old and is having health problems so I'm having to try and get some input on what the problem is.

1st thing you're going to need to do is evac the system and then charge it with the correct amount. You can't just blindly add refridgerant or you could overcharge it, then your pressure readings are worthless. You wouldn't know it was an overcharge, cooling or mechanical problem.

After you get it charged with the correct amount take your pressure readings at idle & 2000 rpms. Also note what the ambient temp is and we'll go from there depending on what you get.............

Okay, it's strange. The temp outside is 84 F and I had the a/c on high with the engine running for 3 minutes before checking. On idle it was reading about 33 psi which according to the chart on the can is low. I needed to get it between 40-50. So I added a bit of refrigerant until it seemed to get around 45 psi, but shortly afterwards the needle started going screwy. I tried to check it at 2,000 rpm and it went up to 70 psi! From that point on the engine died whenever it went into idle. Then it seemed to go to 70 regardless of whether in idle or 2000 rpm.

So, now I'm not sure what to make of that.

Ok.....We need to stop here & now..

It sounds like you are just using one of those cheap gauges that comes on a can. To diagnose this problem, you need a good set of a/c gauges that give you a low & high side reading.

If you're getting 70 psi running on the low side, God only knows what the high side is. There is a safety shut off on that but you can easily push 450 psi before it kicks out and this is assuming it's working and not going higher.. As I mentioned before, the system is probably overcharged at this point and needs to be evacuated & recharged before doing anything else.

Unless you have the proper equipment you should really stop messing with this and stop using the a/c before you hurt yourself or the system. I'm not try to be mean but seriously, this is one area that you really can get hurt if you don't know what you're doing.

No, that's great advice! Thanks! I guess I'll have to take it somewhere to get it properly charged?

Okay, my dad evacuated the charge and filled it up based on the min oz. listed on the sticker in the hood. Doesn't seem to fix the problem. Any ideas? I also adjusted the idle to 700 rpm (650-750 is what is recommended in the manual).

Ok, you've ruled out an overcharged condition. To fully check the system out you'll need a set of a/c gauges. You'll need to know the high & low side reading at idle & high rpm, also what the ambient & vent temps are. Without those readings you'd be guessing at the problem.

One thing you could do without a manifold set would be to look at the end plate of the a/c compressor (it's the part that starts spinning with the clutch when the a/c is turned ont) when the engine is dying. If the plate is stopping causing the engine to die, then your compressor is going out. You could get the system in order by changing the comp, drier, txv and a condensor wouldn't hurt. Get the system working the way it should and IF it was a bad comp then the dying problem should be gone as well........
