Chasing this problem for a long time and I'm at my wit's end:

My 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis (V8 4.6l) has a problem which is getting worse over time. I am nearly penniless and don't drive a whole lot so I've not had it diagnosed yet. I plan to this coming month but first I need some expert advice from experts such as yourselves.

* At all speeds, but especially highway speeds, my car intermittently loses acceleration rather drastically, and revs pointlessly with the accelerator down unless I stomp it, then it kicks back in for a moment and the car lurches terribly. Usually this goes on -back and forth- for a minute or a few minutes. Then it's fine for a while, then the process begins again.

* The Check Engine light is on, but the last mechanic to look at it and who diagnosed it as a bad fuel sensor, obviously got it wrong. The problem was gone for a week or so then returned.

* The car also surges when the 'cycle' I mentioned above is taking place, while sitting at idle speeds, etc.

* Fuel pump has also recently been replaced.

It's been suggested that it may be a vacuum seal issue, bad spark plugs/wires, MAP sensor, EGR valve, or TP sensor.

Anyone support or refute these suggestions? Or perhaps add something to it?

I need help!

Just a couple of things here. What is the code that you are getting now? What was the previous code & what exactly was changed?

Ahem. I don't have that code. He'd scribbled some notes but those were lost I'm afraid. Check engine light is still on.
