95 GMC 305 V8 truck stalls After 6 miles. Sign In

My truck stalls after travelling approximately 6 highway miles after a cold start-up. Gas pedal stops responding, rpms drop, engine rpms go below 1000. (Check engine light does not come on.) I pull off the road, place it in park or neutral then restart it and I am off and running again. I need help narrowing the range of causes, so far I am thinking: 02 sensor, fuel pump\filter or water in the gas. What else could cause this? I am going to start by replacing the rotor/cap, plugs and plug wires since I just bought the truck a few months ago. Has anybody else ever had this happen and if so, what was the cause.

On a side note: Can the engine throw a code without illuminating the check engine light?

There could be a stored code for O2 sensor. The way this is happening does kind of suggest a fuel pressure problem and perhaps dirt and water build up at the filter and then receed and will go on again. For that you should just replace it anyway on this if you don't know how old it is. They can be real sticky in line so take your time not to break lines if at all possible. Dump fuel in old filter into glass so you can see what comes out. Water does accumulate over time and moisture removing additives in fuel should solve that. Fuel pumps can be erratic and will be a pest to verify while it runs properly which it seems to be capable of.

Replacing the ignition parts is fine if older but probably not this problem. I'd start with the filter and the additive and go from there,

Thank you VERY much for the advice, I will definitely start with a Filter and some Heat as well. Obviously I would like to avoid a fuel pump repalcement as I think it may be an in-tank model and quite pricey so I will do as you say and start at the filter, thanks again for the help!
