'94 Probe - Engine Pinging and new Water Pump Sign In

I have a 1994 Ford Probe. The water pump failed recently, and I put a new one in myself. During the process, I damaged the lower timing belt cover, and was unable to replace it. Other than that, everything seemed to go smoothly. Since finishing that job, the car makes a loud, slightly sparadic pinging sound, which increases as the car accelerates. I don't think that the missing timing belt cover would have caused this, but I really don't know what to look at. Is it possible that I somehow altered the timing, despite the fact that I did not remove the timing belt? I did have to remove and re-attach what I believe to be the water pump clutch, which was putting tention on the timing belt. But I don't think this should have changed anything. I hope somebody can give me an idea of what's going on. I'd be more than happy to provide additional information.

Just a thought - if there's air in the cooling system you can get a hot higher in engine area that could make a spark type knock without timing being off. Keep checking coolant level as it should self purge air - check at both recovery tank and radiator, Good luck,

Re: '94 Probe - Engine Pinging and new Water Pump Sign In

Thanks for the suggestion, though it's been like this for about a week, maybe two, so it seems like it should have been purged by now. I ran the car for a little bit with the radiator cap open, after I installed the pump, to try to purge any air.

I looked at the car again recently, and checked the oil, and found it to be about a quart low. I thought I had checked it just previous to the water pump going bad, and, unfortunately, I didn't think to check it until just now. Could this lack of oil have caused such a pinging? Could the damage be permanent? I added oil and it still makes the sound, though it sounds like it may be a little quieter. Any suggestions?

Re: '94 Probe - Engine Pinging and new Water Pump Sign In

First - 1 qt. low on oil will cause no harm nor is the source of noise. Pinging or engine knock can put a hole in a piston if that's what it is at all! You should be purged of air by now - if your heater works that's a clue that the air is out.

Does this noise happen all the time? RPM or load related? I think you said in first post that this happened exactly with a water pump replacement and that some damage was done to the timing belt cover which is probably the source if car is running well.

With what I see right now - it's probably something to do with the cover hitting something it shouldn't. If you can safely push on in (use wood) away from moving parts and the noise changes that would be a clear clue. Also try a small squirt of silicone spray, or just a little wd-40 on the main belt - if noise goes away it could just be belt noise. They can make wide variety of noises - not just a squeal.

Good luck, you'll find it,
