94 Mazda Protege--fan not turning??

94 Mazda Protege--fan not turning??

I have a 94 Mazda Protege', 4cy, 1.8 DOHC, 143,000 miles and the fan that's located in front of the radiator is not turning. What could be the cause of this? Would this also be the cause of when I am sitting idle my a/c does not blow as cold??

Yes, that would account for your A/C problem also..
It's probably a bad motor. Turn the A/C on and if it doesn't start, try tapping on the motor with something metal to see if it jump starts. If it does, then you know the motor is bad. If not, then your going to have to test for power and ground arriving at the motor.

Thanks for your reply. I forgot to also say that when I turn on the a/c, I hear a ticking type sound, do you know what that would be? Also how do you tell if the compressor is bad or going bad?

You don't happen to mention where the ticking sound is coming from but since you asked about the compressor, I assume that is where it's coming from. It could very well be your compressor knocking that your hearing but that's not really a surprise if your running it with no condenser fan. Doing that will raise the pressures to a point of taking out your compressor if it hasn't already. I would unplug that compressor until you get your fan situation fixed, then see what your compressor sounds like.

It's kind of hard to tell but I when I looked under the hood yesterday it sounded like it was coming from the left side near the motor but I'm not 100% sure. That's all I need is for the compressor to go out. I'm not sure how long it has been doing the ticking sound either but it has been blowing warm when idle for sometime. I'm going to bring it to the guy that has worked on it in the past tomorrow to see what's going on and hopefully it won't cost too much and my compressor is not ruined. You may not be able to answer this final question :-) if I need to post in another forum just let me know. My car has 142,140 miles. I bought it new with 7 or 11 miles on the dash. It may depend on the car but how long do motors usually last in cars? And is there anything that you would recommend I do to keep it going besides regular oil changes? Thanks!

The life of your motor will totally depend on the way it is driven and the maintenance it receives.
It only takes overheating it once, running it low on oil once or just going way too long on an oil change once.
I have seen them last as long as 300,000 miles and I've also seen them fail as low as 50,000 miles. It's all in how it's treated. Oil changes and temperature control are the 2 most important factors.

Ok, I took my car to the shop and the fan is turning now but the ticking sound is still there when the a/c is on. The mechanic said it's the compressor going on and off? Is this ok or does this mean that the compressor is going out?

If what your hearing is the compressor cycling on and off, then that in itself is not a problem unless it is doing it too frequently. That would mean that it is being shut down because either the pressure is too high, pressure too low or the evap is starting to freeze. You need some pressure gauges to determine that.

The evaporator has a thermostat probe in it to shut the compressor off if it starts to get too cold and freeze up.
