94' Lumina (Sedan) Slipping? Sign In

I'm getting ready to buy a 1994 Lumina, I've drove it a little bit, but it has this little quirk I'd like to figure out.

Automatic.

Year of vehicle - 1994
Make of vehicle - Chevrolet
Model of vehicle - Lumina (Sedan)
Engine size - V6, 3.4 L.
Mileage/Kilometers 99,000.

Now for the problem, when you start giving it gas from a dead stop: It doesn't move and revs a little bit THEN goes forward.

I've had different opinions on it:

1. Someone told me it could be the CV-Joint.

2. Someone else told me it's the trans dying.

3. Someone also told me it could just be how the car is, and told me to just put some no-slip trans treatment in it (like Lucas's).

I don't even know anymore because it only does it from a dead stop. It shifts fine after that initial slow, it doesn't do it AT ALL in reverse. It shifts cleanly.

It just has me puzzled, and before I buy it I'd love to know what you guys think. I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Scruffy; Assuming the transmission is full of fluid, I'm afraid that you're going to be looking at an overhaul.Unsure Even if it's low on fluid, the damage has already been done. Don't bother putting any 'snake oil' additives in it.

So it's just the trans going then?

Any ideas on how long it would last if I were to buy it?

It's already too late for that trans. There is no "how long". Your just increasing the repair bill now every time you drive it.

Scruffy; 'just the trans'? You may want to rethink this purchase. A trans. rebuild on a FWD car can run around $1500-$1800.00. It's like trying to guess when a light bulb is going to burn out.

Thanks guys, probably not going to buy it. Pretty much saved me $500.

("Just the trans" was me just making sure it was the trans and nothing else. I know they run very high in cost and repair.)

Now I suppose I'll be looking for something else then.

Scruffy - make an offer deducting the expected cost of the trans job. They take it or leave it and YOU end up starting off with the new trans!
