93 plymouth acclaim has no spark

My 93 acclaim quit on the road for the last time, because it has always eventually started. The coil has no spark. Tracing the wire back from the coil it goes into a black connector. Taking the connector apart and putting a test light in the correct hole, on the computer side, for the wire that goes to the coil, turning the key switch on and unplugging the gray connector next to the black connector the test light comes on, plug the gray connector back in the test light goes off. When the gray connector is plugged in the fuel pump comes on along with some relays and something in the throttle makes a sound. The Haynes wiring diagrams have alot to be desired. I hope someone can help me with this problem. Thanks

A common no spark on these cars is the pickup inside the distributor if this is the 4 cylinder engine. The 2.2 and 2.5 liter engines have a pickup under the cap and rotor. It is a round piece of plastic with a 3 wire triangular connector. If you unplug it and turn the key on, take a test light connected to ground and touch the probe to the vehicle harness connector pins. If you hear some clicking going on, replace the pickup. On this advice, I am assuming that the distributor rotor is turning when you crank the engine indicating that the timing belt has not failed.

steve01832- Yes it is a 2.5 and the rotor turns. I unhooked the three wire connector and grounded the test light to the battery touched the probe to each of the wiring harness pins, the light did not come on and there were no clicking or any sounds.

Take the test light and let's check for power at the coil. If the coil has power, hook a jumper wire to a good spark plug's side electrode and ground the other end. Put the coil wire onto the coil and connect the other end to the spark plug. Turn the key on. Touch the pickup harness (vehicle side) quickly on and off with the test light and see if you get spark. If you do replace pickup. In my last post, I forgot to mention that you had to tap the probe quickly on the connector. You have to simulate the frequency of the rotor turning. All you need is to tap the terminals about twice a second. Try this again and let's see what happens.

I was going to post this earlier but forgot too.
Also you’ll only have power at coil positive for the first few seconds after the ignition has been turned on; this is called the fuel pump prime cycle.
If things were working as normal; you would turn the ignition on, the computer activates the ASD (auto shut down) relay for approx two seconds. You continue to turn the ignition to the crank position too crank the engine. The pick up coil begins to generate a RPM signal. The computer sees this signal and allows the ASD to remain on; supplying power to the fuel pump circuit, ignition system, charging system and the fuel injector(s).
In other words no pick-up coil signal during cranking, no ASD, no power sent to the different systems.
I don’t mean to jump in here Steve and get in the way but I’d hate to see Willybill looking for power when there’s not suppose to be any.

That's ok Dan. I often times don't make myself as clear as I should as far as trying to describe a diagnostic procedure. As you know, jumping under the hood and doing it is second nature. Trying to explain the procedure to someone is totally different. I appreciate you giving more info to people when I suffer one of my mental blocks. LOL

Steve, The coil has no spark. I tested the pickup with jumper wire the way Dan said, still everything is quiet under the hood. When I say coil has no spark, I mean when I am cranking the motor and when I am testing the pickup the way Dan said. When the car died on the road, I was driving at 50 mph and the motor shut off; it would still crank. In the past it was the fuel pump that would not work. When it got ready the car would start and run fine until this time.
