'93 chevy astro van - didn't pass emissions Sign In

Just took my 93 Chevy Astro van to get emissions checked in order to get my tag. It didn't pass. Frown The guy said it needed an EGR Valve, hoses cleaned & a new gas cap. Can anyone help with an estimate of cost to replace this EGR valve? This van was given to me & I have ZERO money to have it fixed. My father is a shadetree mechanic...would it be something he could fix? Thanks for any help or suggestions!

You might try cleaning the EGR valve first. Get a new gasket and some carb/throttle body cleaner and take it off.

To the left in that pic is a pintle valve that if doesn't shut tight will throw off NOx readings for instpection and may make it run lousy too. You can push on it and spray - clean up as best you can and see if there's any improvement. Gas cap: Is it missing, broken or the wrong one? That's not the world either way - do make sure you have the correct one. Not quite sure what hoses were suggested to be cleaned. Any vacuum lines need to be on and not leaking.

If you were any where near close to passing then change oil if due, quality new air filter and plugs can help - actually anything to do with tune-up items.

Take it for a good run if legal to get a good blow out when ready to go back for a retest,

Pardon me for being nosey...Wink What state are you testing in? What exact failure? Just because 'they' come up with an EGR code, doesn't necessarily mean the EGR valve is bad. Again, not sure how your state's test readings are;
Does it give you CO and HC readings at cruise speed and again at idle? If so, post those readings, here.
