93 chevy 1500 4x4 sputters when i crank Sign In

Yes my 93 chevy when cranked sputters just a little when in idle. I am just wondering what this may be. Has new spark plugs distributor cap and egr valve. Not sure if an exhaust leak could cause this. I do know when you give it gas it stops. Then when it is in idle it will do it its really not bad just want to get someones input on it..I asked a question before but no one replied I am hoping for better luck this time..Cool Any ideas would be great. It does have dual exhaust and I know the muffler has a whole in it.. But I havent noticed it until now Thanks ahead of time..

An engine size would be helpful and regardless of the engine also take a fuel pressue reading to and then post the info back............

Sorry I forgot to mention engine size.. Its a 350 engine. Not sure how to do the test I am no mechanic and I am not sure how much it would cost.. The engine is supposely rebulit and the trans which i know for sure it has been.. I also have another question I have a exhaust leak right behind the muffler on the pipe is there a quick fix like a heat compound i can buy to resolve this or does it have to be welded? Sorry for the extra question I did drive truck down the road and it seems to only happen when its first cranked it does not sputter in gear park only..When its first cranked.. Hope thats a better detail?

Well to fix the exhaust correctly it would need to be welded or if the pipe was in too bad of shape replaced. But I have seen them come in with soda cans cut open & hose clamped on, muffler tape wrapped all around them (do they even sell that anymore????Sly), and stuff I'm not even sure what it is..........

That system should have throttle body injection and has no test port (Thank you GM Mad). There is an adaptor that installs in place of the fuel filter to hook your pressure gauge to, but not cost effective to buy if you really aren't going to use it that much. One trick you can try before you start it, is to cycle the key from off to run position about 4 or 5 times, leaving it the run position for a few seconds each time. What this does is helps build up fuel pressure in the system. If this makes it run better when you are having your problem, then you really need to be looking at the fuel system.

This is probably the area I would be looking at 1st, if someone else has some other thoughts I'm sure they'll come in & let ya know......

Also do you think it could be trash in the fuel lines? And could I try a good ol bottle of lucas treatment to see what happens? It seems to sputter for a few until warm then tampers off. Just trying to be more detailed for you..

Re: 93 chevy 1500 4x4 sputters when i crank Sign In

It's really hard to give a scenario without being able to look at the truck. It sounds like just a cold start problem which usually isn't too serious.

Most cold start problem involve fuel, in on way or another. With electronic components, when they fail, it's usually under load & heat. You don't see a coil, module, injector, etc. malfunction when it's cold and then start working once the vehicle warms up. It's always the other way around.

Now your system is low pressure, around 13psi, so the system recovery is alot faster than a vortec with cpi that has 60psi. (This would be a text book symptom for a bad pump on that system)
It's possible you may have sensor misreporting temp which could also cause this, but lets try cycling the key 1st to see if that helps or not before we get too far ahead......

Turning the key four or five times does not matter. Is this a good thing maybe?? Any other suggestions..

Re: 93 chevy 1500 4x4 sputters when i crank Sign In

It can be a good thing.... Tough thing here is I don't what to have you throw a bunch of parts at it or go out & buy a lot of expensive tools you aren't going to use.

With a cold start problem there is a lot of sensors that get "ignored" while in open loop and just a few major inputs and a default strategy are used...

If you haven't already, go ahead & change the fuel filter & run you fuel cleaner. The tbi injector orfices are pretty big but the cleaner isn't going to hurt anything..... If you have an ohm meter, check the resistances of the coolant temp & air temp sensors. If you search I know Tom G has posted a few charts or if he sees this, maybe he'll post'em again.....

UPDATE...
Okay as I said above I replaced EGR valve replaced spark plugs distributor cap. Now I have replaced fuel filter. Now it sputters while in gear at a stop light seems to be steady or more often.. I think we are getting somewhere here lol.. So any more input on what to ck for now??

Good ahead and use the chart Loren posted to check the sensor and make sure the connector is fitting tight (thx Loren)

But after what you said, I am real curious to see what the fuel pressure is.....
