Advice needed.. Took my truck to the shop today the steering has gotten really loose on it.. So I dropped it off a few hrs later called the guy and he said they had tighten up the play in the steering... I take that as the tighten a bolt down on the steering box and the gears are probably slipping???
Should I go ahead and replace because the steering still has a little play in it.. The alignment is on the money had that checked to... If I do replace is a reman ok???? I dont want any issues with this like I did with my a/c... Guy told me all together about 400.00 to replace...
Oh and I did have the rubber piece replaced on the end of the steering shaft a few months back not sure what the name for it was called but I spent 120.00 for that..
If you cant fix it then dont mess with it...

Adjusting that box was another big mistake. That adjustment is put there for assembly setup only. The reason a box gets a lot of play in it is because it wears a flat spot in the worm gear. The problem is that this wear will be in the straight ahead position only. If they tighten down on the adjuster to attempt to remove the play in the straight ahead position, not only will they not remove the play because the flat spot is still there but now when it is turned to either side, it will be too tight. There is only one way to resolve that play, assuming it is coming from the box and not the pitman arm, is to replace the box.

What is the pitman arm?? Wondering if that is the one with the rubber boot I had replaced?? The steering box will be replaced is a reman ok??
Also the guy says I wont need an alignment but I dont believe that your input?
If you cant fix it then dont mess with it...

The pitman arm is the arm at the bottom of the box. Some have a ball socket that wears and some have the socket on the bar it attaches to (center link) instead.
Sometimes play at that socket can get mistaken for play in the box. It has to be inspected closely while someone works the play to be sure.
The reman is OK. That's about all that's available for it anyway. No you won't need an alignment. The new box will bring it back to where is started. It is possible to have an off-cent steering wheel after if someone tried to align it earlier with the worn box but that won't cause any tire wear or pulling.

What you described is what I had replaced.. I think it had 3 or 4 bolts in it with a rubber piece.. Cant remember what it was called...But the other one was worn out it had cracks in it.. Thanks Hammer

No, your talking about the rubber coupler at the top of the box. That is the input. I'm talking about the output where it attaches to the steering linkage.
