Jul 21, 2009, 4:46 PM Post #1 of 3 (1241 views) 93 BMW 318i DIES in first two gears Sign In Ok So i drive a 93 BMW 318i. Recently it has been doing this thing, that if i dont give it gas in first or second gear the rpms just reach 0 and the car dies. Basically it wont idle. However, If i give it gas while in these gears I can manage to keep it alive. Once I get going around 3rd gear the car has no problems. To make it more interesting It has only done this 3 times in the last month. As I am sure you can tell by the context of the message the car is a manual. Anyone have any ideas? No I'm afraid not. This car is fuel injected and doesn't even have a carburetor. You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle.
