93 Accord sounds loose & clunking, has low power & exhaust in air system Sign In

Hi Everybody,

I read the "let us help you" thread, so hopefully this info helps. Sorry I don't know the engine size. :(

1993
Honda
Accord EX
Not sure engine?
220,000 miles

I have a couple of questions about issues I'm having with my 1993 Honda Accord EX with manual transmission. There's longer mostly irrelevant (I think?) history at the bottom if that helps you at all.

1. Why does the car squeak when I turn the car / steering wheel sometimes?

It sounds louder, feels different than just something with the steering mechanism, but I can't explain how. I was reading online very similar descriptions of the sound/issue and it sounds like it could be lower ball joints? Very tight unpleasant sound and feeling.

2. What is causing the rackety, clunking, sometimes crunching sound?

It's usually in 2nd or 3rd gear, not going super fast, maybe more so when going over hills? The car just generally sounds like big metal parts especially in back are loose and that the cab of the car is going too low. Is this bad shocks? Ball joints or u-joints? Something else to do with the suspension? I keep thinking there is a piece of metal underneath hanging and randomly hitting the ground but I can't see anything loose.

3. Why have I been smelling exhaust in the air system?

I am pretty sure it's not coming up through floor or somewhere like a friend suggested, just notice it when I have the heater on. Have to crack window so I don't get sick. Will this go away once the valve cover gasket is replaced and the oil stops leaking on engine? I'm notice a lot more exhaust lately in general, especially in reverse, which really confuses me. When I stop the car and get out there is a lot (to me some is a lot?) of white exhaust still coming out of muffler.

4. Why does it have such low power??

I had an 85 Accord about 10 years ago and it had so much more power and felt different to drive. I know back then one of my buddies at an auto shop made all these adjustments to the gearing and timing and stuff but that can't be the only reason. This car scares me when parking or stopping on a hill, uphill or downhill. The e-brake is pretty crappy which doesn't help either. Basically when parallel parking or getting out of a spot on a hill, I really have to gun it more than I should, just to not roll forward/backward and hit another car. I never had this issue with the last Honda or any other car. I live in Seattle and have had to navigate stop and go traffic and parking on steep hills, so driving a stick on hills in heavy traffic in the city is nothing new to me, but geez it's a little perilous.. I just replaced spark plugs today and it seems to have more power but it is still pretty wimpy. Reverse gear is the worst, and it sounds a little junky and tangled backing up even on flat open pavement. Almost like a bicycle chain off the gears? Not sure why reverse would be so bad.

Anyway, sorry for so many questions but hoping different people may be able to answer different questions? Even one question answered would be a big help. I don't know much about cars but I've had some real lemons and broke down thousands of times with almost every possible problem so I can actually recognize certain sounds and issues, if not fix them myself. This car's issues mystify me! I am about to leave on a cross country road trip and want the car to survive.

Let me know if you have any ideas here and thanks again!

Thanks,
Blue

[Background/car history: I just bought a 93 Honda Accord EX this past Fall. Guy kind of screwed me over with car, I think he temporarily masked a bunch of problems to sell it in a hurry, situation was a little sketchy. I've had several problems with it since I got it, but nothing major: driving home first day, I had to get a jump and help home after stalling on hill, turned out battery was a goner, then the front tires had to be replaced both with big bubbles and wire coming through, then slave cyclinder when clutch went out.

Now I'm replacing rear brakes and valve cover gasket because of oil leak. Took to shop for estimate and they said to replace those and also engine mount but I'm ignoring that for now if I can. Just having my mechanic friend do the work. The car was shaking, steering wheel oscillating really badly and whole thing clunky a couple days before I replaced front two tires due to totally de-stroyed front tires. Wondering if it did damage to suspension that week before replacing tires, though I tried to not drive the car almost at all? Also, there's a few terrible deep sharp holes in road in my neighborhood which I've driven over/into accidentally more than a few times? Would that hurt tires only or could it damage anything else?]

Need to take it to a shop that can get it up into the air to inspect the steering and suspension components.

Could have an exhaust leak. Need to get it to a shop that can get the car into the air to inspect the exhaust system.

That's called gravity. Gravity tend to pull things toward the center of the earth. It is going to take more engine power to go up a hill than down it. You should have your brakes inspected when you go to have the rest of the car inspected. Have them check the parking brake system.
Reverse is going to be loud and whiny on an older Honda because reverse is a set of spur cut gears.
