91 Honda Accord WHITE SMOKE DIED HELP! DUMB GIRL! Sign In

1991 Year of vehicle
HONDA Make of vehicle (Ford/ Chevrolet)
ACCORD Model of vehicle ( Taurus/ Cavalier)
UMM NO IDEA it's a stick shift Engine size (2.0/ 5.7)
150K Mileage/Kilometers

Hi everyone,
First:
I'm a chick, I don't know cars and I'm not affraid to admit it.

Second:
I bought my friends 1991 Honda Accord it's my FIRST STICK SHIFT.
I'm NOT used to a car like this I'm in HELL.
HELP!

I was driving it and within a week it started smoking.
Her friend who's a mechanic looked at it said it was some busted pipes on the radiator. I got them fixed for $90 bucks.
3 weeks later here I am lucky to be alive.
The car DIED on the 101.

Started SMOKING WHITE SMOKE within a minute and the temp gauge went to PAST the "H" and in 1 minute tops it died and the check oil and check engine lights went on and BAM dead car amongst speeding cars and a bus that nearly took my life.

I am SO UPSET.

The mechanic friend dude came to look at the car and said it needs this stuff:
This is EXACTLY how his text read:

2 Timing Belts
3 Seals
1 Water Pump
2 Timing belt tentioners
1/4 power steering fluid
Two 1/4 of engine oil
1 break pad kit front side
1 heater hose 5/8 it's the size!

My Questions are:

1) Is it better for me to buy the parts myself?
2) He said he'd fix it and buy the parts all for $430 or just do the repairs for $260 if I bought the parts.
So.....should I just let him do that or am I better off buying the parts?
HELP!
I need my car do I just sell it? Or get it fixed?
What do you guys (And car savvy gals) think?
Thank you!
MLE Carmen :-)

I'm not so sure his diagnosis is even correct. I don't know that a timing belt is going to do anything for your problem. Your car overheated so the only way a timing belt could be related to that is if the water pump failed and if that were the case, there could also be a lot a bent valve damage internally.
The other issue is the white smoke which is usually an indication of a blown head gasket which would have been the result of the overheating. You could easily be looking at an engine beyond repair and completely exceeding the value of the car.

I'm just a diy guy and no professional but I would recommend finding an actual mechanic for a diagnosis.

Most of the things he listed have nothing to do with your major breakdown. 1/4 oil? Normally one would say that you're two quarts low. One break pad kit front side? I don't believe you can buy break pads for one side. When you buy front pads you get both sides in the box. He said 3 seals. Did he say what 3 seals need replaced? The car has more than one belt but I believe there is only one timing belt.

His terminology makes him seem like a very shady mechanic. Does he work in an actual shop or does he just call himself a mechanic? I'm guessing the reason the car broke down was because your friend had him working on it when she had owned it! Cool

Before sinking money into other things such as pads I would worry about the main repairs and getting it running again first. You need to find out if it's worth fixing before sinking money into minor repairs because the minor repairs are just a waste of money if it won't run.

Call a shop and ask what they charge for a diagnosis and go from there.

I'm just asking this because you said you know nothing about cars. When you say you saw white smoke where did you see it coming from? Did you see white steam coming from the egine compartment or was it white smoke from the exhaust?
