'91 Accord, ignition/starting problem Sign In

I have a 1991 Honda Accord EX, four door sedan. It has about 208K miles on it. This morning I went to start the car and when I put the key into the ignition it would not turn. I have never experienced this before. So I pulled the key out and put it back in, tried to turn the ignition again, and it wouldn't turn. After doing this procedure a couple more times it turned, but not like it normally did. It was not smooth and didn't feel right. Once the ignition turned the engine started, but the key was locked in the start position and did not rotate back to the run position. So the engine was running while the ignition was stuck in the start position, causing a grinding noise.

What has happened? And what needs to be fixed?

DON'T ALLOW STARTER TO STAY ENGAGED WITH ENGINE RUNNING - DISCONNECT BATTERY IF YOU HAVE TO!

Test with battery disconnected and spray WD-40 or lock lube of some kind in the key slot as a maybe for help but it's more likely the cylinder is in need of replacement. May or may not work with just a good lube even with the key still stuck in it.

Worth a try in an emergency,

T

Thanks for your help! I will try some WD-40 first.
