'90 Suburban dies after warm start then no crank Sign In

Problem started when my '90 5.7L 1/2 ton 4x4 240K Suburban almost died a few times while warm idling (RPMs dropping and rising, back and forth for about 15 seconds). Now it is occasionally dying about 5 seconds after a warm start. When trying to restart, I turn the key and nothing - no dash lights, no buzz, no crank, no noise at all, but the headlights work (battery seems okay). Then anytime from a couple of minutes to several hours later, the thing starts right up again. Is there anything that could explain both of these symptoms?

Thanks for any help!

Glen

Glen; I'm racking my brain to try and think of a scenario that could cause both symptoms. Hmmm. The idle surge issue could be a TBI base gasket, which is very common. But....Have you checked the battery cable connections?
The side post type cables can become corroded on the inside...they'll look fine until you take the bolt out of the cable. It's possible that you may be losing enough voltage to cause the ECM to "run home to mama" and also cause the lack of cranking amperage. I'd lean towards thinking you may have two, seperate, problems?

Thanks, Loren. I will check these items and see what I can find.
