Hi there. I have an old 89 Toyota pickup(3.0, 250K kms) that will not start. If jumped it starts immediately. Battery is charged and brand new. When I put the key in the ignition I get power, but as soon as I turn it to start I can here a "click" and all power is gone. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can only have one of two things. Either the new battery is no good or there is a bad connection at the battery cable end, which is the most likely cause. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks for the reply, Hammer. I also think that it must be a bad connection. The battery terminal connections are clean and tight, so I'm thinking that it is on the opposite end. Is it safe to assume that it is the ground(-), because when I jump start it I am hooking the -cable to ground, and +cable to the battery, and it starts no problem. How should I go about testing this? The -cable goes from the battery to a fuse box and a grounding point. Auxiliary power(stereo, dash lights, etc.) work fine, but when I turn the key it goes dead. Thanks again for your help.

If your hooking your jumper ground to the engine, then yes, i'd say the ground cable is the problem. You can do a voltage drop test on that cable if you want. Use a digital voltmeter with one lead on the battery post (not the cable end) and the other on the block and hit the key. If you see more than a volt reading on the meter, the cable is losing too much.

Still no luck. I cleaned the end of the cable where it meets the block, and used dielectric grease. Continuity testing from ground post to block is positive. No reading on voltage drop test. Jump starts no problem, but just get clicking from the starter when trying under just the battery power. Anymore clues?

If there were no readings on the ground, then test the positive cables. Your losing current somewhere and you just need to find out where. See what happens to the battery voltage when you try to crank it.
