have a 89 chey pick up, but the speed odomator dsen't work, only every few months, whats wrong?

I think this still used a mechanical cable. They can fail or wear and be intermittent. It stinks, but if cable you have to check it at the dashboard end where you can pull the cable out and see if it's ok at the ends. This can be funky. If it has cruise control you can check it from underhood to see if the cable does engage with the trans gear that spins it,
