Hello All,
My 87 Volvo 240 (automatic) often dies when stopped at a light or at a turn. The problem occurs only when the accelerater is pressed coming away from a stop. The car must then be put into nuetral and started again. The fuel pump, fuel sensor, relay switch have all been replaced and the problem continues to occur. The strange thing is that drove for days without having this problem after the relay was replaced but then started again just recently. Help!

Take a look at the wiring harness at the left side of the engine under the intake mainfold- most likely it is inside a large sheath made of dark black plastic about 1" in diameter. Using a razor blade, cut lengthwise about 3-4 inches back from the front of it and inspect the insulation on the wires inside and outside of the sheathing. It would not surprise me for you to find significant isulation degration, even bare wiring. If this is the case, a new underhood engine/computer sensors wiring harness will be needed. If there appears to be no problem with the wiring, there is an idle control valve located again on the left side of the engine, with a large vacuum line and an electrical connector attached to it. (The valve is about 1" in diameter, and about 2 1/2" long, is silver in color, and is attached to a small metal bracket.
If you are handy, remove it, and try cleaning it with carburetor cleaner to remove the fuel deposits. Be sure to clean the inside of the barrell only, then reinstall it to see if it makes a difference.
A wiring harness will cost you about 850.00 installed. The valve, if you take it to a shop and they agree this is the problem( they do a diagnosis), should be around 275.00 to replace.

hmmm, hairy one.
The accelerator setting might be too low. What RPM does it idle at when you start it up and let it sit? 1000RPM or lower? Try adjusting the accelerator cable to a higher idle speed.
OR
Could be missing, check spark plugs.
