87 Honda Accord - Was leaking fluid, replaced the hose, now temperature gauge is going up and down Sign In

I have an 87 Honda Accord. For the last week I've been losing quite a bit of fluid from the radiator from a bad seal. The hose leads to a spot underneath the air filter, to the rear of the engine. It took awhile, but I got the hose off, cut off a few inches where the leak was, and put it back on.

I went to drive it and the temperature gauge is going up and down randomly, never going above the halfway point. I began to drive and noticed that whenever my foot touched the accelerator (5 or 50mph) the needle would go down below the lowest spot on the gauge.

I drove the car for about 10 minutes when I started getting seriously worried about it. I parked, poped the hood and noticed that the fan was not running like it should have after 10 minutes on the highway.

Would this be caused by air in the line from my quick fix of the hose? Perhaps a thermostat or water pump issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'd rather fix it myself than spend $100+ on something that would only take a few minutes to do.

Get the correct hose for starters. Then you need to make sure all the wiring in the area is still hooked up and properly fill the system with coolant. Air needs to be known purged out as it gets trapped in engine by closed thermostat. It can take a few cycles of warm ups and cool downs.

Note: That hose to engine probably has the thermostat at the engine and a good time to replace that while you have this drained and doing the hose. Sensors near thermostat or on its housing are related to gauge and possibly the switch for radiator fan is there too - not sure exactly,

How can I purge air from the line??

How can I make sure my engine is still being properly cooled while the needle is jumping up and down?

You never menitoned putting any coolant in back when you cut a hose off. It about couldn't have had enough to run properly after that temporary fix.

When the system is tight and proper parts back in place you fill it at radiator cap and wait. (If this system doesn't have a pressure radiator cap on radiator hit again for procedures) It will usually drop and keep adding till you can't add more. Then put cap back on and allow to warm up running heater and watching underhood and gauges.

Let cool after there's noted heat at radiator (carefully) and low to no pressure in system and refill as some air will have purged out. Repeat that till nothing but coolant is at the radiator cap when subsequently checked when cool. Can take several cycles and time. A run around the block may get some more air out so several checks are needed to be sure it's full.

Gauges, thermostat and sensors can and will be erratic - too slow or fast to react with just air till all air is out and when that's known if things are erratic then further repair is needed.

If filling a cooling system is totally confusing you then please seek experienced help. THERE'S RISK OF BEING BURNED WITH HOT COOLANT OR FLASH BOILED COOLANT, PRESSURES THAT WHEN RELEASED WILL CAUSE FLASH BOILING ETC.

DON'T OPEN A PRESSURED UP SYSTEM TILL IT'S COOLED TO LOW TO ZERO PRESSURE. If adding to a running engine when cooler go slowly so as to no shock engine with cold coolant. Adding to a hot engine can cause it to flash back out at you - USE ALL CAUTION!
