The biggest cause of that in a car that old is the rubber lines get porous and since mechanical fuel pumps are designed to pull and not push, they draw air instead of fuel. I would remove the gas cap and blow out the fuel lines and then replace all the rubber portions of the line. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Ran into one, years ago, where the cam/fulcrum attached to the front of the cam gear came loose. Drove me nuts trying to find the cause. (short drive) Loren SW Washington

A good way to isolate the problem is to use a 5 foot rubber hose and a 5 gallon can of gas hooked directly to the fuel pump. If it will run on that, you know your problem is in the tank or lines, if not, you have to look and the pump and carb.
