78 Accord has no accelleration from third up	Sign In

78 Honda Accord 1.8l 2d hatchback cvcc.

I just acquired a 78 Accord that was parked for about 2 years. The engine starts but idles very low and caused the car to shake. I replaced the fuel filter and a couple of obviously damaged vacuum lines. The car runs well enough but does not accelerate after about 4000 rpm in 3rd gear. 4th and 5th have no power what ever. I can shift into the gears but there is no pull on the car even with the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor. What steps can I take from here?

Couple of things to check; Cam timing and restricted exhaust. I don't think that I'd try and crank a 1978 engine that tight, anyway. JMO. Especially a belt driven one.

Sitting for 2 years?? To start change the oil & coolant right off the bat... Then put a set of plugs & points in it...... (damn can't even remember the last time I had to say that)

I can't even remember the dwell setting.... 50 degrees??? .028 " with a feeler guage?????

better look that one up........

adjusting the valves wouldn't hurt either

But you'll probably be suprised at how well it runs after that

Just take your car to a good mechanic & get it serviced.It will better your car.

vandy: Just how was that reply the least bit helpful? Should a repair forum just tell everyone who asks anything to take it to a shop? Why have a forum at all if that's the case?
