My baby -
Year: 1971
Make: Chrysler
Model: New Yorker
Engine: 440
Mileage: 90k

I have had a few troubles with this car but this one has been the worst. The starter will randomly decide not to engage with no real rhyme or reason. One day it works one day it might not.

Everything else works/turns on; lights, radio, power windows, etc...
What I have tried so far: Replaced the starter, replaced the battery cables, cried myself to sleep, prayed to the car gods.

Any suggestions would be helpful (starting with the cheapest).

Thank you,
Shod

I'm not a huge mopar fan but that's a nice ride you have there Shod.....

With any electrical problem you always want to make sure you are working with a good battery....

It sounds like you've cover a lot of the other stuff... Does the starter just whine when it's acting up or does it grind?

If it's not grinding it almost sounds like a bad bendix.... I would be tempted to warranty that starter & try another one..........

If you got a picture post it in the general section........I'd like to see it if you have lookin good...

The starter doesn't do anything at all, no grind or whine like it's not getting any juice.

As for warranty on the starter. I don't have the paper work that came with it anymore so i'm not sure I can do that.

And when it comes to a picture I'm currently at work and my internet at home is out until Thursday but I'll see what I can do.

If that's the case....hold off on pulling the starter..... When it's acting up get a test light and see if the trigger wire (small wire) going to the start has power when you turn the key to the start position. also see if jumping 12v to trigger wire will crank the starter.........

Have you tried moving the gear shifter to different positions to see if it will crank when it's acting up? (Be sure you have your foot on the brk when doing this in case if decides to fire up in rev or drive)

P/S all this is going off the assumption that you've had the battery tested & it is in fact good....

To add my 4 cents....look for this part ..should be mounted on the firewall /drivers side or drivers side fender area...

Starter relay/switch
Weren't a common part that failed but have replaced a few years ago.....
Thats all i got..so don't make me use my brain to think that far back again...

Your solenoid could be grounding out, as well as a wire that shouldn't be
