Remove the plug and check it like rear end. Fill it up just to the bottom of the plug hole. Someone has told me maybe the clutch needs adjusting, that that can cause grinding too. If the disc or pressure plate has problems or rusty some will drag and have residual turning force on input shaft of trans. When is it grinding? If you wait a few seconds when truck is stopped it shouldn't grind going into first or reverse which I don't think are syncronized in a 3 speed anyway. 2nd and 3rd should be. When slowing down you do have to wait to shift back to first normally till stopped with the old style or get good at "double clutching" if you want it again before that. That was normal procedure.
